It is important to identify the people that would be interested in buying the products or services they offer. The customers that are interested enough to view a website or call for more information are more likely to make a purchase. These individuals often have a pre-existing need or desire for the advertised product and they are ready to buy.
In order to identify this audience the company must know their product well. How does it help the consumer? Why do people usually buy the product? Is the product a necessity or a luxury item? Will the consumer need to make one purchase or multiple purchases? Where is the mostly likely place for the consumer to look for this product?
Each question leads the seller closer to their target audience and to a strategic marketing plan.
